Learning how designers and builders actually work
The long version
The situation
Vectorworks makes design software for architects, landscape professionals, interior designers and entertainment designers. It was where I first applied my architectural engineering degree professionally.
What I did
I spent my first two years as a CAD consultant, then became education and training manager, and then product manager, leading a team of five specialists and helping set product direction with the marketing director. I built a global, multi-language online community for students, with a licensing and donation program, that added more than 50,000 users. About 20% went on to professional licenses after graduation.
What I took from it
I learned how designers and contractors really use their tools, and how to explain complex technology in terms of its practical value. That skill has served me in every executive meeting since.
