About

An owner's perspective, a builder's discipline and an entrepreneur's accountability

Portrait of Nicholas La Forest

I've always loved building things, from playing with Legos to drawing hospital construction on a whiteboard in my living room as a kid. In high school I couldn't choose between CAD and computer programming, and I took AP programming. Architecture turned out to be the mix of technology and design I was looking for. I still love seeing a vision become a reality.

I studied architectural engineering in Rhode Island.

My career hasn't followed a straight line, and that's its value. I've taught designers to use software, built an event production company, run systems for a global sourcing business and founded a construction firm. In each job I learned to bring technology, money and people together around something that has to work on a fixed date.

Today I work on the owner's side at the University of Maryland Medical System, overseeing capital programs that include the $580M Stoler Center for Advanced Medicine. I finished my Executive MBA at the University of Maryland in 2026 to connect building decisions more closely to strategy and finance. Next, I want to take on broader responsibility and build and lead larger teams.

Principles

What I believe about the work

Do what you said you'd do

At Susquehanna Services our culture came down to one sentence: "Do what we say we are going to do, when we say we are going to do it." I still work that way.

Make the complicated simple

Executives, clinicians and contractors can't act on what they can't follow. I turn technical, financial and schedule problems into clear options and a decision.

The operation comes first

A hospital doesn't stop for construction. Good delivery protects patient care, safety and daily operations while the work goes on around them.

Beyond the work

Outside the office

Outside work, I've served as a chief judge for Maryland elections for the last six years, and I'm a USA Swimming official.
